I’ve been schooled

I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think

-Socrates

Can we learn to live a good life after having carried extensive baggage into every relationship for decades? Could philosophy be helpful in this endeavor while not putting us to sleep? Could we start this process from the comfort of our iPhone or tablet?

Yes we can, thanks to one Swiss-born, British-based philosopher and writer, Alain de Botton and the School of Life.

I know, you’re probably saying I hated philosophy; I took a class in college and used it as nap time in between my useful classes.  Further, all of these outwardly enlightened writers and scholars profess to have massive philosophical reading lists; some even claim to read a book a day!

Well guess what, you don’t need to begin your journey with a book a day commitment. The School of Life’s channel is for the commitment-shy and the time-crunched.  Illuminate your understanding of the human experience while watching 5 minute videos on everything from Evolution to Envy and the Benefits of Hugs or the Joys of Kissing.  Once you delve into the animated, often humorous video playlists you could be hooked. Easily exploring hard to discuss topics while having coffee or commuting to work. https://www.youtube.com/user/schooloflifechannel/playlists

If you are motivated and life permits extensive study, Botton is a great writer. A natural beginning to his line of thought could be found in his early work, The Consolations of Philosophy. http://alaindebotton.com/philosophy/. In Consolations he explores the utility of philosophy in the business of wisdom.  Recently, he released a new book, The Course of Love, which explores the complexity of long term relationships by the story of a couple moving through the stages of love, http://alaindebotton.com/the-course-of-love/, it looks to be a wonderful addition to his library.

I encourage you to check out the School of Life and Alain’s works, you will not be disappointed, and if you are there’s even a video to help you through it.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu7n0XzqtfA
